Government Policy
Dementia was announced as an Australian Government national health priority in 2005. Through this move, dementia has been recognised as a major health concern which, in terms of prevalence and health costs is expected to escalate unless an effective approach to prevention, management, service provision and research, and support are implemented. In recent years, a range of national and state government policies and processes have been established to support improved care and outcomes for people with dementia.
The Australian Government in Sept 08 approved a further $3 million to support the individual needs of the carers of people with dementia. This support comes on top of current record funding of more than $40 billion over four years for residential and community aged care.
