Germany dementia statistics

  • Affects 1,200,000 people at the moment (70% women, 30% men)
  • experts estimate for the year 2030 2,500,000 people affected by dementia
  • every year 200,000 new cases of dementia are diagnosed
  • between 65 and 69 every 20th person is affected by dementia, between 80 and 90 every third person
  • costs for Alzheimer-dementia affected person are average 43,767€ per year (paid by: 2.5% legal health insurance, 29.6% legal care insurance and 67.9 % by the family)

Government Policy

  • From July 2008 by law 1.2m people with dementia will be included in Social Care System. Additional funding is approx. 2.3 billion € pa
  • Increasing from July 2008 onwards by government and German health care system
