Case Study - Flora is supported by telecare
Flora is a 62 year old lady with early onset dementia. Flora had 2 grown up children, one of whom had been living with her until recently. She had limited insight into her condition, required supervision and help with most ADL tasks, although on referral she was still able to undertake tasks such as making tea reasonably safely.
The major risks identified were:
- Vulnerability to exploitations from others including inviting strangers into the house
- Leaving the front door open, locking herself out and losing keys
- She became lost in town and was unable to find her way home
- She was also at risk on falling, particularly on the stairs
Prior to the referral for technology, Flora was being recommended for residential care, as the family could no longer cope with the level of supervision required.
Solution
Telecare is now helping Flora to continue to live at home, by alerting the monitoring centre if the front door has been left open or if she had left her home inappropriately at night, if she has fallen, and Flora knew to press the bogus caller button on the front door should she be confused by a stranger at the front door.
"We were really concerned about Mum, and were visiting or calling her several times a day and night and it was wearing us out. Now our visits are more social and we can stop worrying constantly about what might happen." - Daughter
