Key Risk - Reduced sense of balance or coordination
Falls:
A fall is the result of a loss of balance which causes a person to descend to the ground (or to some other lower surface) in an uncontrolled and unexpected manner resulting in an impact. Every year between 33% and 50% of people over the age of 55 suffer a fall but a disproportionate number of these people will have an underlying medical reason for their fall. Falls can result in serious physical injury including the fracture of bones (such as the hip or wrist). If the faller is unable to get back up quickly then further serious consequences might follow irrespective of the degree of physical injury. These include hypothermia, pressure sores, bronchopneumonia and a loss of confidence to perform Activities of Daily Living (including going out).
