Key Risk - Poor or decreased judgement
Cooking accidents:
The Health and Safety Executive has identified that the kitchen is the highest risk area within the domestic home for accidents. The risks increased when the individual has reduced physical strength and stamina and also when they have short term memory problems. The latter can lead actions such as placing an electric kettle on a gas/electric cooker ring, leaving pans to boil dry, placing metal containers in a microwave and a number of burn and scald hazards.
Lack of nutrition:
Many elderly and disabled people suffer from a combination of low income and difficulty in carrying out activities of daily living such as food shopping and meal preparation. This can result in them suffering from poor nutrition due to eating poor quality food and/or insufficient food. Studies have shown that improving people's nutritional levels has a significant effect on their overall health and level of function.
Insecurity/fear of crime:
People who live alone and are suffer from an on-going health dysfunction frequently also suffer an increased feeling of vulnerability in relation to their personal safety in the home. In particular they have an increased fear of being burgled or suffering from nuisance callers whether or not they live in a high nuisance area.
